Lake City was once named Alligator Town after Seminole Indian Chief Halpatter-Tustennuggee. Chief Alligator, as he was called, gave his name to the Town when his tribe resided here. At one time Chief Alligator was friendly toward the settlers. Later however, a Treaty was signed and they agreed to locate to Ocala, Fl. The Chief was bitter about the Treaty and commanded several raids on the settlers. Later the Chief was transported to Arkansas along with other Seminloe Indian Chiefs.
